Mahogany Settee with Fan Back and Floral Marquetry

A finely conceived Edwardian inlaid mahogany settee in the Sheraton Revival taste, displaying elegant proportions and restrained neoclassical ornament. The back is centred by a distinctive fan-shaped splat formed from finely cut radiating slats, framed with satinwood stringing and enriched below with delicate floral and foliate marquetry in contrasting light woods. This decorative panel provides a strong visual focal point while remaining light and architecturally balanced.
The design is notably asymmetrical, a feature frequently encountered in Edwardian decorative furniture. One side incorporates a shaped upholstered backrest framed in mahogany, while the opposite side is fitted with a finely spaced slatted back rail. The arms are entirely of solid mahogany, gracefully curved and terminating in subtle scrolls, contributing to the crisp linear quality of the piece and reinforcing its classical revival character. No upholstery is present on the arms, allowing the quality of the timber and inlay work to remain fully visible.
The upholstered seat is covered in a light, patterned fabric, likely later, but sympathetic to the period aesthetic. The settee is raised on slender, tapering legs with restrained line inlay and stylised classical ornament, ending in neat pad feet. Construction and finish are of good quality throughout, consistent with Edwardian craftsmanship.
