Maling Pottery Pink Lustreware Jug, c.1920s

This is a stunning pink lustreware jug made by Maling Pottery in Newcastle-upon-Tyne in the 1920s or possibly the early 1930s. It has a lovely fluted design at the front of the jug which sweeps along the bottom and up the base of the handle. There is metallic gold lining around the top rim of the jug and a line around the base for an added touch of elegance. Maling's lustreware was at its peak of excellence in the 1920s under the leadership of their chief designer L.E. Boullemier.
The jug is in good condition with no chips or cracks and just a tiny amount of crazing to the underside of the base. There is some loss of the metallic gold around the rim where it has been rubbed away but this is only to be expected with nearly a hundred years of use and cleaning. The jug was most probably originally for a washstand but today would make a fabulous vase or simply an elegant decorative piece.
The jug stands 25.8cm tall at its highest point, is 17.5cm from the edge of the lip to the furthest point of the handle and 10.5cm across the widest part of the body. It weighs 950g.
