Delightful late 19th.c. portrait of a sailor by the American maritime artist Reginald Cleveland Coxe dated 1883. Good large size, 25″x 31”, in oil on canvas. The smiling and impressively bewhiskered skipper is shown with one hand on the tiller the other gripping a line, wearing a traditional fisherman’s blue gansey, canvas trousers and a bowler type hat on his head. Clearly inscribed in the lower right hand corner ‘J.T. Jackson from his friend R. Cleveland Coxe 27th Jan 1883’ and ‘T.J. “Belle”’ across the sailor’s chest (presumably the familiar names of both the sitter and his boat. Presented in excellent condition, relaid onto a canvas stretcher.
Reginald Cleveland Coxe (1855 – 1926) was born in Baltimore but established his reputation in the 1880’s with maritime subjects chosen from around the Massachusetts harbour town of Gloucester where he kept a summer studio.
