Michael Cardew Winchcombe Pottery Cider Flagon

A Very Early Michael Cardew (for Winchcombe Pottery) Cider Flagon.
Is this the most humble pot from one of the greatest potters of the 20th century?
It just might be!
Dating to the 1930's, this charming and wonderfully rustic pot would have been wood-fired in Winchcombe Pottery's historic bottle kiln. Unusually, the outer surface has been left unglazed, revealing the raw earthenware body and a wonderful colour which shifts from a mid-umber to paler ochre shades. Variation in colour like this is sometimes referred to 'ash flashing' and is caused by the fluctuating temperatures of what was a gloriously unpredictable kiln!
The inner surface has been glazed to ensure it is water-tight and non-porous to the contents and it is affixed with a simple strap handle. Very much made to be used and put into full service either in the home....or taken to work by the infinitely practical folk of the 1930's Cotswolds.
Fully marked to the underside with both the potter's seal and that of Winchcombe Pottery.
The price includes packing and worldwide tracked shipping. Dispatch within 24 hours of payment.
