Mid 19th Century Watercolour of Dover #1
This is one from a wonderful set of four early Victorian watercolours of views of Dover including the White Cliffs and Dover Castle, circa 1845, all of which are listed separately.
This view has a redcoat soldier lounging against a wall by a gun emplacement with Dover Castle looming large behind him. A brown and white dog looks expectantly towards him while three more soldiers, though more roughly sketched, can be spotted near the road leading to one of the Castle gates. The soldier's uniform of red tunic and white trousers is typical of that worn by the British Army in the time of the Napoleonic Wars though it continued in use right up to the Crimean War in the mid 1850s.
Dimensions: Frame 58 cm x 43 cm
Image on view 44.5 cm x 29 cm
Weight 2.15 kg
Condition: The painting is in very good antique condition though perhaps a little faded. The gilt frame is somewhat distressed and has been touched-up with gold paint in places.
Each of these pictures was taken apart, cleaned and resealed in their original gilt early Victorian frames using framer's traditional paper tape.
These paintings were attributed to William Heath (1775-1840), a British artist who once described himself as a "portrait & military painter", but we think this unlikely due to various clues in the pictures themselves (see others in this set). They currently lack an attribution.
Postage & Packing: £15 within the UK. Ideally, we would like to sell these paintings in pairs, as this would help to protect the glazing during transport.
