Minton Flat Back Figure The Cobbler's Wife c.1824

A very rare early Minton porcelain figure of the Cobbler's Wife. The very first Minton figures, models 1-8, are small and only modelled to the front, the back being recessed and undecorated. Decorated in rich enamels and set on an oval base, the front with some gilt decoration. This model is number 5, showing a clearly furious woman trying to throttle her cobbler husband who is seated on a stool formed of shoe lasts, presumably not working as hard as he should be. A basket and a pair of black leather boots lie on the floor. Unmarked, c.1824-1825.
Reference: Minton Pottery & Porcelain Of The First Period, Godden, page 82 and a design sketch of the model from the original factory book is shown amongst others of these early figures in plate 132.
It measures 10.5cm (4 1/8") high, 7.6cm (3") wide and 1.3cm (3 1/2") deep.
In excellent condition with no damage, repair or restoration. There is a little gilt wear to the base and a fine glaze line to the reverse of the base, about 5mm from the top. Payment is accepted by bank transfer, card payments (via an online invoice, I'm afraid we cannot take payments over the telephone), Paypal and UK personal cheque. If you prefer to pay by Stripe please go to our website where we offer that option and additionally options to "Pay in 30 days" and to pay in 3 instalments, all securely supported.
