For sale we have a lovely oil painting on canvas by the late 19th century artist George Stainton.
The painting depicts a rural scene consisting of a cattle and sheep being driven in front of thatched cottage located by a wooded lane. The painting is faintly signed G Stainton 1874 in the lower right hand corner, marked verso with "Near Ruthin, Denbighshire, N Wales" and initialed G S.
The painting measures 12 inches x 16 inches (30cm x 40cm) excluding the gilt frame and both the frame and painting are in an excellent condition.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
George Stainton was a late 19th century artist who was active between 1860 and 1890. He is particularly well known for his marine works depicting ships and boats in calm seas in soft morning or evening light. However, George Stainton also painted a smaller number of landscapes depicting rural scenes.
