North Wales Longcase Clock.
Lovely little late Georgian oak longcase clock with 30 hour movement by Edward Richards of Dolgellau in Snowdonia, North West Wales c.1800. Particularly good Georgian country case featuring a square hood with turned columns and brass fittings. Long, shaped door repeated in the base panel, flanked on each side with quarter columns, original feet and backboard. In very good working condition, the face and works would appear to have been recently cleaned and restored. Original weight and pendulum.
As an interesting footnote Edward Richards appears to have been quite a character. His entry in the book Clock and Watch Makers in Wales includes this arresting quote ‘…Richards was one of the most ingenious self-taught mechanics that ever lived but a predilection for cwrw (beer) and for the company who met nightly at the Raven & Pitcher at Dolgelly had such an effect on his brain that he threw himself into the river and perished’.
Please contact us for more images, delivery and shipping quotes. Alternatively you are welcome to view and collect at our large warehouse showroom in Llandudno Junction, North Wales (approximately 45mins from Chester). Open 7 days a week. 01492 580022.
