Circa 1880 late 19th century.
Step into the golden age of British landscape art with this exquisite late 19th-century oil painting, "during a summer afternoon in Borrowdale, Cumberland of the Lake District," masterfully rendered by the acclaimed Victorian artist Stephen Enoch Hogley, circa 1880. This captivating work is more than just a painting—it's a portal into a serene and storied corner of England's natural beauty, immortalized in oil with breathtaking precision and romantic grandeur.
Set within an ornate, gilded frame that complements its period origins, the painting transports you to the tranquil heart of Borrowdale in the Lake District. Towering fells rise majestically in the distance, their rugged peaks partially shrouded in swirling clouds, as golden afternoon sunlight breaks through to caress the hillsides. A shimmering river meanders gently through the lush green valley, reflecting the purity of the sky and the timeless grace of the English countryside.
In the foreground, a farmer leads a small herd of cattle along a winding country path, their presence grounding the vast landscape in the quiet rhythms of rural life. The scene is alive with the gentle rustle of leaves, the trickle of water, and the soft footfalls of the animals—a moment of perfect stillness and poetic realism.
Stephen Enoch Hogley's work embodies the Victorian reverence for nature and the sublime, rendered here with exceptional technique and emotional depth. The balance of light, shadow, and composition reveals a seasoned hand steeped in the traditions of the British landscape school, yet expressive enough to elevate this piece into a category of its own.
Whether you're a collector of fine art, a lover of British history, or a connoisseur of Victorian elegance, this painting is a rare treasure—a timeless homage to the harmony of man and nature in one of England’s most beloved regions.
About the Artist – Stephen Enoch Hogley (1842–1927) he was a British landscape painter born during the early Victorian era in the village of Almondbury, West Yorkshire, just two miles southeast of Huddersfield. From a young age, Enoch displayed a strong passion and talent for painting, which was nurtured by the respected artist and mentor Peace Sykes. He went on to formalize his artistic education at the Holmfirth Mechanics’ Institute, located on Huddersfield Road.
Enoch developed a distinctive style, specializing in scenic landscape compositions that often featured mountainous terrain, rolling hills, meandering rivers, and grazing cattle. He was particularly drawn to the expansiveness of the countryside and preferred to paint in the post-meridian hours, making use of the afternoon light to enhance the atmosphere in his work.
In 1847, Enoch married Mary Jane Farrand, and together they had eight children, according to genealogical records. Toward the end of the 19th century, he became a member of the Yorkshire Union of Artists, further establishing his presence within the regional art community. Stephen Enoch's works have been exhibited in galleries and sold at auction houses internationally. His paintings remain sought after by collectors, with a current auction record reaching $6,911 USD.
