Oil Portrait of King Charles II Wearing Garter

Oil Portrait of King Charles II Wearing the Royal Garter
English School, circa 1850, after Sir Peter Lely (1618–1680)
A distinguished 19th-century oil portrait depicting King Charles II, inspired by the celebrated court portraiture of Sir Peter Lely. Executed circa 1850, this work reflects the Victorian revival of interest in Britain’s royal past and the enduring influence of Restoration portrait imagery.
Subject & Medium
Oil on canvas.
The portrait depicts King Charles II in armour with elements associated with the Most Noble Order of the Garter, symbolising royal authority and chivalric tradition. The composition follows established portrait conventions derived from the work of Sir Peter Lely, principal court painter to Charles II.
Composition & Technique
The King is presented in three-quarter orientation with a composed outward gaze. He wears a full periwig, armour, and white cravat, with a suspended insignia referencing the Order of the Garter.
The palette is subdued and tonal, dominated by deep browns, blacks, and warm undertones characteristic of 19th-century interpretations of earlier Old Master portraiture. These darker passages allow the flesh tones and luminous white cravat to emerge prominently, while restrained highlights across the armour provide depth and structure.
The handling reflects a later Victorian interpretation of Restoration portraiture, combining softer facial modelling with broader and more economical brushwork in secondary passages. The sitter’s expression conveys measured authority and calm dignity consistent with idealised royal imagery.
About the Sitter
King Charles II (1630–1685) was born at St James’s Palace, London, the eldest son of King Charles I and Queen Henrietta Maria.
His early life was shaped by the English Civil War and the execution of his father in 1649. Following years of exile across Europe and failed attempts to reclaim the throne, including defeat at the Battle of Worcester in 1651, Charles eventually returned to England at the Restoration of the Monarchy in 1660.
His reign marked the revival of court culture, theatre, royal patronage, and the arts, alongside significant national events including the Great Plague and the Great Fire of London. As Sovereign of the Order of the Garter, Charles II represented continuity of royal and chivalric tradition during the Restoration period.
Although he produced no legitimate heirs, many of his acknowledged descendants became prominent figures within the British aristocracy.
Historical Significance
During the 19th century there was renewed fascination with Britain’s royal and dynastic history. Paintings such as this were created for Victorian collectors seeking historic portrait imagery associated with England’s monarchy and aristocratic past.
This work belongs firmly within that tradition, preserving the visual language established by Restoration court portraiture while reflecting Victorian collecting tastes and historical revivalism.
About the Artist
Sir Peter Lely (1618–1680) served as principal court painter to Charles II and became one of the defining portraitists of the Restoration era. His compositions established a widely recognised model for royal portraiture that was reproduced extensively by his studio, followers, and later artists.
This painting, executed circa 1850, should be understood as a later interpretation after Lely, demonstrating the continued admiration for his portrait types in Victorian Britain.
Signature
Unsigned, as is typical for works of this type and period.

Presented in its original frame, recently overpainted in gold to provide a refreshed and uniform appearance.

Condition Condition Report
The painting is in stable, displayable condition.
The canvas is supported on a stretcher and appears structurally sound. The painted surface shows age-related wear including areas of thinning, minor paint losses, historic retouching, and fine craquelure throughout. The varnish layer appears slightly dulled and uneven in areas, and a light professional clean may further improve clarity and tonal definition.
The face and principal features remain comparatively well preserved.
The frame has been later overpainted in gold and displays visible signs of age-related wear, small losses, and surface inconsistencies beneath the later finish, though it remains stable and suitable for display.
