Original wooden Lincolnshire farmer's cart sign
AN EXCELLENT EXAMPLE OF A TRADITIONAL FARMER'S CART SIGN
An excellent example of an English farmer's wooden cart sign that would have been attached to Mr Shearsmith's cart in the 1920s. William Robert Shearsmith was a farmer and innkeeper at Caistor in Lincolnshire. There is a link to a photograph of him by his cart below. William Robert Shearmsith moved to Caistor Top in 1912 from nearby Cabourne, leasing teh Fleece pub from the late Rev T. Dixon of Holton-Le-Moor. Large local sheep fairs were held at Caistor Top and the inn would be visited by shepherds and farmers to make payment for the animals purchased at the fair.
William died in 1947.
The cart sign, dating to the 1920s, is an excellent, and large example of the type, with the original paint and iron work. Cart signs, now often regarded as folk art, were simply advertising methods, similar to the writing on the side of van. The wear to the paint, and the texture, make this a very fine example.
It measures 5'9" in width and is a substantial piece of English farming history.
