Otto Tilche 19th C. Orientalist Watercolour
We are offering a large watercolour by the listed and highly collected artist OTTO TILCHE, who has signed the painting in the lower right hand corner. The painting depicts a view of an arab scene, with four camel riders meeting under two palm trees in the foreground with a desert town to the right and low hills in the background.
Otto Tilche does not appear to have exhibited his work, and the art reference sites cannot appear to decide whether he was Italian, German or British. However, according to Jeremy Wood's extremely useful book, 'Hidden Talents', he appears to be British. Jeremy Wood states ' Painter in watercolour of desert and eastern scenes. This prolific artist usually painted small pairs of watercolours often showing Bedouins and camels in the desert or Nile scenes. He also painted under the name of 'A. Calvert'. He signed his work O. Tilche or with the initials on small sketches.
Autction results for Otto Tilche, can be found at artnet.com (8), findartinfo.com (24), artprice.com (24) and arcadja.com (11). He is also quoted in Hislop's Guide to the UK Art Market. On 1st February, 2012, Christie's sold one of his paintings for £1,654.
