Throughout the 1960′s and 70′s a group of young Brazilian designers produced some of the most extraordinary antique furniture of the period – a series of unique forms which merged traditional materials, native and colonial influences and a progressive, relaxed attitude that all came together to somehow express Brazil’s unique take on the modern movement.
We are delighted to have two fine examples of the Brazilian Modern with this fantastic pair of leather lounge chairs c.1968. Heavy tropical hardwood frames with construction expressed in the oversized peg and mortice joints. Supporting a very thick leather sling seat stitched with gaucho style leather lacing. On top of this sits a loose cushion forming both the seat and back pads in a softer hide with decorative stitching. Maker unknown but very much in the style of Brazilian Modern designers such as Jean Gillon and Sergio Rodrigues. The chairs were originally purchased from the Liberty store in London in 1968.
