Pair of Early 19th C ‘Gillows' Parlour Chairs

A wonderful pair of Gillows solid mahogany parlour chairs in exceptionally fine original condition, very heavy and robust without weak joints or damage. Both chairs stamped ‘Gillows . Lancaster’ to both seat rails, this stamp used by the company between 1825 and 1835.
One seat rail further stamped J C Miller (John Miller – working at Gillows from 1815 and still on the firm’s payroll in 1835 where he is listed as earning £1.1s.7d – ref: Gillows of Lancaster and London 1730 – 1840 by Susan E Stuart)
The second chair with what appears to be pencilled provenance and names within the seat rails - now largely illegible.
The chairs have been newly and professionally re-upholstered in a pure silk heavyweight upholstery fabric of a rich Chantilly gold colour.
Well padded, comfortable, robust, both chairs with scroll carved back bars and substantial turned, tapered and reeded front legs terminating in original large brass casters stamped Cope & Collinson. The long back legs with a gentle rake.
A true pair of chairs by this renowned maker, considered by most experts to be the best maker of the period.
With wonderful well balanced proportions and of outstanding quality, this is a very impressive pair of beautiful, usable chairs.
Dimensions are:
20 inches wide, 22 inches deep and 35.5 inches high.
Floor to seat is 18.5 inches.
For metric please multiply by 2.5 I describe and photograph my pieces accurately and with the aim that on arrival each will exceed expectations.
I operate a full refund guarantee and am always happy to give free, honest and friendly advice.
