Pair of Edwardian ‘Lebus’ Stacking Bookcases

This very handsome and fine pair of Edwardian oak 5 section stacking bookcases by Lebus, a well-known cabinet maker of the period, feature dentil cornices with glazed lift and slide doors. Each one measures 34 ½ in –87.6 cm wide, 14 ¼ in – 36.3 cm deep and is 74 in – 188 cm in overall total height. These bookcases, because of their clean sleek design and excellent quality, would make an outstanding and striking focal point to many different rooms, in a wide range of settings, both traditional and modern.
Harris Lebus had its origins in the 1840's when Louis Lebus, a cabinetmaker, emigrated from Breslau, Germany, to England. He set up shop as a cabinetmaker in Hull, where his business flourished. He then moved to London, where he outgrew one set of premises after another, and in 1875 he moved with his family to the relatively prosperous Georgian neighbourhood of Wellclose Square. When Louis died in 1879, his eldest son, Harris, took over the firm, relocating the shop to Tabernacle Street, near London’s Curtain Road. London’s antique furniture industry had changed markedly in the mid-nineteenth century, with the city’s growing population and the emergence of a middle class whose members aspired to live in style and is recognised for its significant contribution to the Arts & Crafts ideal of making beautiful, useful objects and antique furniture.
