Pierre Langlade 1812-1909 Gouache Great Tit

1 of 6
We are pleased to offer this really beautiful gouache by the French artist Pierre Langlade, who has signed the painting in the lower left hand corner. The painting depicts a great tit in pursuit of a beetle on a branch of hawthorn blossom. The execution of this painting is masterly!
Pierre Langlade was born in Aubusson, France on 28th May 1812. This town is noted for its manufacture of carpets. He trained in Paris in 1830 and returned to Aubusson, where he specialised in design and flower painting. In 1843 he moved to Paris, where he married and set up a publishing and printing business. In the 1860s he returned to Aubusson, where the company he had previously worked for had become an Anglo/French firm. For various reasons he accepted an offer from Henry Widnall & Company, who had a Carpet Factory in Bonnyrigg near Edinburgh in 1864 and worked for them for thirty years as a designer.
For the last 15 years of his life in retirement, he painted mainly flower studies in oil and watercolour and gouache. He died on 2nd November 1909 only months after completing his last watercolour at the age of 97.
A more detailed biography is available on google under the following heading bonnyriggglasswadehistory
He exhibited frequently at the Royal Scottish Academy and other Scottish exhibitions. Auction results for his painting may be found at artprice (7), artnet (6), arcadja and findartinfo (2 each). He should not be confused the the 20th Century French painter with the same name, although some of his auction results may be listed under this 20th Century artist.
The painting is unmounted and framed in a very nice 2" frame that suits it very well. It is ready to hang.
