Superb portrait of a smart looking gentleman by the acclaimed British society painter Frank O. Salisbury c.1930. The subject is believed to be banker, businessman and racehorse owner Sir Frederick Eley (1866 – 1951), shown half length dressed in a suit and tie, sat in a high back armchair and gazing into the future. Very well painted in oil on canvas with lovely confident brushwork to the face. Clearly signed in the lower right hand corner. Excellent condition, presented unframed on the original stretcher.
Frank O.Salisbury (1874 – 1962) rose from humble beginnings to become one of the busiest painters of society portraits, state occasions and historical events of his day. His work can be found in national collections on both sides of the Atlantic. Among his many prominent subjects are Churchill, Montgomery, Queen Elizabeth II and six US Presidents.
