A fine and imposing figure. This half-length provincial English school oil on canvas dates to the early 19th century. Sea captains of the day were often depicted in portraits in this fashion with their ship in the background - in this case a Royal Navy vessel flying the red ensign. The red ensign or “red duster” originated in the English Navy in the 17th century flown by the Royal Navy. It wasn’t flown by Merchant vessels until 1864. Until 1864, the Red Ensign was also the principal ensign of the Royal Navy, and as such it was worn by ships of the Red Squadron of the navy, as well as by those warships that were not assigned to any squadron The white ensign and the blue ensign were also used by the Royal Navy. By 1864 The Admiralty began to feel that the use of three ensigns, white, blue and red was confusing, and eventually the white ensign was settled on for the Royal Navy. The red ensign is now used as the civil ensign of the UK.

The ever so slightly naive quality of the painting suggests a provincial artist, yet one who has captured the nobility of the Captain - a man who was on the high seas in living memory of the great Admiral Nelson. The portrait has craqueleure throughout and could be cleaned, but we prefer our early 19th century portraits untouched. The old boy has taken one a midships and has just a very slight puncture to the canvas on his jacket which can be seen as a very small white mark.

He sits in a rather nice gilt wood frame. A rather nice English school of the period.
