This is a marvellously characterful portrait of a lion by the well known illustrator Harry Rountree (1878-1950). Rountree was a prolific illustrator working around the turn of the century in England. He was particularly good at depicting animals and produced many book illustrations for others as well as for his own books. He also produced illustrations for Punch magazine and also P.G.Wodehouse and Arthur Conan Doyle.
This picture in watercolour and gouache shows the lion looking quite soulful in colours which are subtle and quite deep hues for a watercolour. It is set within a very deep gilt frame which although it has a couple of age related scratches to the large inner slip still suits the lion really well. The portrait is signed and dated (19)15 and is in great condition under glass. It measures 55 cms by 48 cms including the frame.
