Portrait of Mr Coggeshall 1901 Portrait Drawing Gallery %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
A Portrait of Mr Coggeshall by Joseph Oppenheimer (1876-1966).

Brown and blue ink/watercolour washes on white wove paper. Signed with the artist’s initials `JO´ (upper right). Further inscriptions are written on two separate pieces of paper taken from the back of the original backboard which read: Sketch of W. D. Coggeshall Dec. 6th, 1901, done at the rooms of Julius Spier, 2 Whitehall Court London. The sketch was done in 10 minutes. The other label is printed with the artist's name and is inscribed …. Coggeshall.

In 1881 Julius Spier was listed in the census records as a China merchant and an associate of Franck. After Spier took control of S. M. Franck in 1909, the company began to supply archaeological material, early ceramics, sculpture, and architectural features to international museums and collectors, including George Eumorfopoulos, Oscar Raphael, Charles Seligman, the Victoria and Albert Museum, and the British Museum as well as institutions in North America, especially the Royal Ontario Museum. In addition to supplying other dealers with goods, S. M. Franck was at the forefront of filling the demand for early Chinese art during the 1920s and 1930s.

Born in Bavaria to a family of artists, Oppenheimer began painting at an early age. He studied at Royal Academy in Munich, and in 1896 moved to London where he set up a studio in Chelsea. He was a member of the Chelsea Art Club, the Royal Society of Portrait Painters and the International Society of Artists, and travelled frequently to paint throughout England, Europe, Canada and the United States. His works were exhibited at the Carnegie Institute in Pittsburg, the Royal Academy, as well as at the Munich International Exhibition in 1904. Known for his portraits, as well as his works of the English landscape, Oppenheimer’s works are a blend of both impressionist and modernist styles.

A pencil drawing of the same subject ‘Portrait of Mr Coggeshall’ by Oppenheimer dated Aug 15th, 1902 was sold at Bonhams Knole, on the 6th Sep 2011. Evidently, Mr Coggeshall may have been an art collector as the inscription on the Bonhams drawing testifies: Whitehall Court – to Mr Coggeshall to keep company to the rest of his collection after an A1 one drawing.
