Pr. Champleve Enamel Gilt Metal Figural Candelabra
We are offering for sale this very attractive pair of Chempleve Enamel decorated Twin Arm Figural Candelabra with icicle drops. These are a true pair as the figures are raising opposite arms.
Champlevé is an enamelling technique in the decorative arts, or an object made by that process, in which troughs or cells are carved, etched, die struck, or cast into the surface of a metal object, and filled with vitreous enamel. The piece is then fired until the enamel fuses, and when cooled the surface of the object is polished. The uncarved portions of the original surface remain visible as a frame for the enamel designs typically they are gilded in medieval work. The name comes from the French for "raised field", "field" meaning background, though the technique in practice lowers the area to be enamelled rather than raising the rest of the surface.
Each candelabrum features a circular base decorated with raised fan shapes enamelled in turquoise and crimson. The central column is a semi-nude female figure in draperiies holding an urn upon her head with one arm, from which issues the two arms and a central glass finial. The two arms both have a circlet of curved metal loops with a button and icicle drop on erach. The two candle sconces are also enamelled in turquoise, crimson and dark green. They are unmarked but are probably French..
Height: 11 inches - 28cm
Width: 10 inches - 25.4cm
Base Diameter: 3 1/2 inches - 9cm
Weight: 1.43 kg each.
Materials: Gilt Metal, enamel & glass
Condition: Very good. There is no damage and the enamel is intact.
