Primitive Painted Pine & Tin Hand-Lantern c.1830

The primitive painted pine and tin hand lantern, having a sloping tin roof with pivoting hatch and swing handle, with the punched initials of ‘WHT’, the carcass having been scraped back to its original blue green paint, the sliding glass faced interior bearing a single candle holder, the whole surviving from the second quarter of nineteenth century England.
The lantern is in good, working order with a candle still able to be placed in the original metal holder. The whole has a good aged patination to the surface of both the tin and the original painted finish with it being worn more heavily in some places than others with a small hairline to the front right flank. All of the components are original aside from the sliding thick plate glass which has probably been replaced a few times over. When a candle is lit the tin roof does get hot but not the handle.
The way the lamp is constructed point to it being estate made or made in a workshop by the owner for his own personal use.
A real provincial delight.
