A rare opportunity to acquire a superb oil on canvas portrait of prince albert of saxe-coburg and gotha,the prince consort. This beautifully painted example is after the studio of famous artist franz xavier winterhalter ( born 1806-1873 ) and is of extremely good fine quality. The portrait has been professionally restored to include wax re-lining. This quality portrait is of considerable size

the frame is a beautifully decorative period example in very good condition and has a wonderful rich gold patina. Other examples which show prince albert in the same pose are seen in the
national art gallery in london. Osbourne house on the isle of white was prince albert and queen victorias second home as well as buckingham palace london & other portraits which compare are also on display to the public at these locations. The portrait was probably painted around 1842. The artist winterhalter eventually died in 1873. Prince albert married queen victoria,who was his first cousin, in 1840 and over the
