Race against time. 1831 H. Alken Equestrian print.

Several prints were published in period of this famed event but the scarcer and more attractive by far is by Henry Alken's hand coloured example published by Lewis and Co.
'G. Osbaldestone Esq: performing his wonderful and unprecedented feat of 200 miles against time. This match took place at Newmarket on the 5th of November1831 for one thousand guineas. The time stipulated was within Ten Successive Hours. the number of horses to be unlimited. Mr O ar starting offered to take any odds that he did the distance within 9 hours and large bets were made against him. he started at 12 minutes after seven in the morning and won the match in gallant stile (sic). doing the same in 8 hours and 42 minutes being 1 hour and 18 minutes less than the given time.'
- Overall in fair condition with some wear and damage consistent with age. The print has minimal discolouration and fading but there is some tearing and creasing - the former lower right (see image of this). Obviously owned at some stage by someone with intimate knowledge of the event as the horse depicted in this scene is recorded as 'Emma' in pencil.
The 19th century frame, with egg and dart decoration, has a small number of old (treated) worm holes and although we have not removed the print from it a more modern backboard has been fitted at some time. Overall present well. It has a more modern backboard. Overall dimensions 24 by 18 inches. All items are covered by the Distance Selling Regulations which give buyers the right to cancel the purchase within seven days after receipt of the item for a full refund less RETURN transport costs
