Rare Early 17th Cent Small Oak Settle

A very rare and original small oak settle, English c. 1630, with unusual carved barley spiral twist supports reminiscent of Elizabethan chimney stacks.
The settle is completely original with no later timbers, the fielded panels to the back are hand chamfered with visible tool marks. Lovely medullary rays to the quarter sawn oak and there are what appear to be early cut marks to one arm – from when the only cutlery used at the dinner table was a knife, which was wiped and cleaned on the edges of antique tables, fireplaces and chairs.
The settle is peg joined and very sturdy with no loose joints or creaks. Waxed finish. The twin plank seat original also.
Wear, knocks and bruises consistent with age and use. The seat and back rails with double channel carved detailing.
A stunning early English settle made by hand and made so well that it has survived in excellent condition for 400 years or more and has a very long life ahead of it.
Dimensions are
Width is 42 inches, depth is 24.5 inches and height is 42 inches.
Floor to seat is 17 inches.
For metric please multiply by 2.5. I describe and photograph my pieces accurately and with the aim that on arrival each will exceed expectations.
I operate a full refund guarantee and am always happy to give free, honest and friendly advice.
