A very unusual Georgian period oil on panel of a bear. The panel is an armorial for a family name and has been painted on the panel most likely as carriage sign etc to display ownership by said family. It is very unusual to get oil paintings of bears an this shows the bear statant (in heraldic language) on a green verge. The bear is typical of early depictions of the animal in that it actually looks quite wolf like. The painting is in very good condition with slight wear and tear as one would expect. C.1800
