A George III Brass Socket Candlestick. Stamped LLOYD’S to each corner of the base.

The gun barrel stem topped by a broad sconce and raised on a very heavy gauge square base with dished centre. Possibly for aboard a ship.

The marks to this candlestick and its very heavy, stable base suggest that it may have been made for for Lloyd’s of London, a market for underwriting marine insurance which was founded by Edward Lloyd (d.1713) at Lloyd’s Coffee House in 1686.
