RARE Pair Thomas Mayer Blue & White Transfer Platters Blue and White Transfer Printed Transferware %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
A Fine and Very Rare Pair of Antique English Blue and White Transfer Printed Platters.

The pattern is known as 'Animal Prize Fight' and is from Thomas Mayer's Olympic Games Series. It is a rare pattern from an elusive figure in the history of English blue and white production.

Date c.1830

The design is curious with the central panel depicting a somewhat gruesome scene of a tiger overpowering a fallen person, with two gladiators aiming their weapons, with onlooking spectators, temples and vegetation. The border of stylised flowers, scrollwork and panels of classical buildings.

There is a tiny cypher / mark, in underglaze blue, to the back of each platter. Other than this there are no makers marks, however, for confirmation of the maker and pattern, please see -

Pattern number 14775 on the Transfer Collectors Club website

or

Page 265 of Volume 2 of Coysh and Henrywood Dictionary of Blue and White Pottery.

These platters are superb and would make a very worthwhile addition to any collection of blue and white, or antique transferwares.

Dimensions:

These are large and impressive pieces, each measuring approximately 45.7cms in diameter.

Condition:

Both are in overall good condition for age with some age-related surface wear and marking. Some firing issues commensurate with age and production process (the odd discoloured blister here and there and also a small firing split to the face as shown in the relevant photo). Some wear to the back and again with some discolouration as clearly shown. A little wear to some of the corners and edges, again as shown.

Overall they appear as complete and display extremely well.
