Rare Sardinian Folk Art Embroidered Woven Rug Textile

A Very Rare Antique Sardinian Textile Embroidered Rug or Trunk/Chest Covering
An unusual and very charming piece dating from around the late 19th century to early 20th century (or the corresponding Arts and Crafts period).
Likely from the 'tessitrici artigianali' (the craft / folk weavers) of the Samugheo region of Sardinia.
Hand-knotted and woven on traditional looms, the construction is of died wools against a tight flax or cotton ground.
Bears a tiny, old tag verso for 'G Cau Cagliari'.
These wonderful, early, folk textiles were never originally produced in large numbers and, with the advent of modern mass-manufacturing processes, the tradition was once almost entirely lost.....although it does still continue via a small number of dedicated workers as part of Sardinia's cultural heritage.
Period examples of these textiles, such as this piece, are now considered rare.
This piece isn't perfect, but it remains a charming and scarce example of period Sardinian Folk Art.
