Red Walnut Lowboy. Georgian, English, Circa 1730.

AN EXCEPTIONAL EARLY GEORGIAN ENGLISH LOWBOY.
Made in red walnut, (see below) this table has a superb deep shaped apron and 4 finely swept cabriole legs terminating in pad feet.
History has been kind to this piece. The drawer linings are all original and the feet are undamaged. The handles date to about 1740, and there are marks to the back of the drawer fronts, signs of even earlier wire pin handles.
It has a superb deep rich colour and patina.
Dimensions:
27.5 inches high, x 27.5 inches wide x 17 inches deep
A note about red walnut -
Juglans Nigra. Black Virginian Walnut.
Known as 'Red Walnut', it has a dark, dense grain and reddish colour. In the early 18th Century it was imported from the Eastern colonies of North America when supplies of European Walnut, particularly from France, became limited and subject to high taxation.
It was a favoured timber for quality cabinet making in the early years of George 2nd's reign, but at 5 times more expensive than mahogany, (available and starting to be imported from central America at the time), it is not difficult to see why red walnut's use was restricted.
Good examples of antique cabinet work using red walnut are difficult to find now, and are much sought after.
