S. J. Watson Oil Portrait Dog 'Mischievous Fluff'

We are offering for sale this charming oil painting by the artist S. J. Watson. The painting is unsigned, but the original frame was inscribed S. J. Watson 'Mischievous Fluff'. The painting depicts a white, long haired, fluffy dog pulling at a strand of wool from a blue tasselled cushion, which is laying on the seat of an upholstered armchair.
We are of the opinion that the artist is probably a Mrs. S. J. Watson, who exhibited a painting at the Society of Woman Artists in 1885. She lived at St. John' s Park House, Highgate Road, London. This no longer stands, but we have found out that in 1885/6, this address was listed in a directory as St. John's Park House School, so she may have been the owner or a teacher there.
Due to the condition of the old frame, the painting has been newly framed in a 3 3/8" silver gilt frame, which complements the colouring, but to keep the attribution with the painting, the old frame has been mounted on the back. It will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
Image size 10 5/8" x 7 1/2" - 27cm x 19cm
Frame size 17 5/8" x 14 1/2" - 44.75cm x 36.8cm
Medium Oils on canvas
Condition Very good. The surfact is clean and taut and there are no repairs, craquelure or paint loss. There are very slight stretcher marks consistent with age. The frame is new.
