Sale On. Antique Blonde Turtle Shell Original Stand.

Antique Blonde Turtle Shell on Original Stand.
This superb example comes complete with both front & back of the carapace ( most shells only have the front section )
The colour is a wonderful rich blonde. A most unusual feature is the original heavy cast stand for display purposes.
This is the only example we have ever handled with the original stand. The scientific name is Podocnemis expansa.
This was purchased from a private collection & has not been on the open market for over 100 years.
These shells come from South American river Turtles & in the 19th century ships purchased the animals for food/ meat to have on board.
The shells were then hand polished by the sailors on the homeward voyage to be given as presents or sold for extra money.
This shell comes with CITES article 10 certificate for sale within Europe. Certificate number 578775/01

Shell height 63.50 cms, shell only width 46 cms.
With stand height 83 cms.
