Sayyid Said Sultan of Oman and Zanzibar 1791-1856 Oman Arabia Unites Arab Emirates %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
An extremely rare 19th century ink, pencil, gouache and watercolour drawing by the celebrated French marine and exploration artist, Louis Le Breton (1818-1866), showing Sultan Sa'id bin Sultan's palace at Mtoni, Zanzibar, with possibly the only original contemporaneous drawing of the Sultan's palace and the only existing pictorial record of Sayyid Sa'id's fleet of Bombay built brigs and corvettes anchored offshore, all flying the Omani flag of the Sultanate.

Louis Le Breton travelled to the Indian Ocean on the corvette, Le Berceau, in 1844. The ship's captain, Joseph Romain-Desfossés, later promoted to Vice-Admiral and Commander of Réunion and Madagascar, was empowered by the French Government to sign a commercial treaty with Sultan Sayyid Sa'id and appoint M.Broquant as French Consul. They arrived at Zanzibar on 9 November 1844. Richard F. Burton's 1860 account in 'The Lake Regions of Central Africa' states that Captain Desfossés arrived on the corvette, Le Berceau. According to HH Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi in his historical 1996 publication 'Omani-French Relations 1715-1900'p.96, "a French detachment consisting of three ships arrived in the port of Zanzibar on the 9 November 1844. These were the Bueran, a corvette with twenty six cannons and 265 seamen, the frigate Crocodile with its six cannons, and the twin-sailed Colibri with six cannons." This is unlikely to be the Bueran as Desfossés was at that time still captain of the Berceau. Interestingly, Le Crocodile is the only ship recorded as a steam paddle aviso and in the background of the present drawing there are three ships, two flying the French tricolour, and one of these is a steam powered paddle aviso.

Louis Le Breton's drawing has captured a unique moment in time with this view across the bay. Possibly drawn from the offshore coral island of Chapwani and showing Sayyid Sa'id's navy with several ships under repair, no doubt due to storm damage. In the background are Captain Desfossés' delegation of three ships, the Berceau, the Colibri and Crocodile, and to the right side, the coral islands of Kibandiko and Changuu.
Inscribed by the artist, 'Maison de Campagne de l'imam de Mascate (Zanzibar)'

Originally this drawing was part of a collection of three by Le Breton, one of sailing ships off Tenerife, and the other a beach settlement on the island of Nossi-Bé, Madagascar. In the collection of The Mariners' Museum and Park, Virginia, U.S.A., there is another version of the Nossi-Bé drawing by Le Breton, inscribed 'Madagascar, Ile de Nossi Mitsou' which is signed and dated, Louis le Breton 1848. Le Breton's time as surgeon on board the ship Berceau was cut short due to ill-heath and he hastily returned to France in 1846, which was fortuitous as on 13th December 1846 the Berceau was lost with all hands in a cyclone after leaving the harbour of St.Denis on Réunion. After a period of convalescence Le Breton resigned as a naval medical officer and transferred to the Department of Maps and Charts in Paris.

Louis Le Breton, a painter, draughtman and lithographer, was born in Douarnenez, Brittany. He continued a family tradition by studying medicine although he combined this with a commitment to the sea by taking his initial training at the Naval Medical School, Brest (1836-37). After leaving Brest he joined the corvette Astrolabe as 'Surgeon, 3rd Class', but his artistic skills were soon noticed by the commander of the expedition, Jules Dumont d'Urville, and he was given the further position of official expedition artist on the death of the artist, Ernest Goupil, at Hobart Town, Van Diemen's Land, on the second of the Astrolabe's four visits to Australia [ Raffles Bay and Port Essington on the northern coast, March-April 1839 Hobart Town, December 1839 to January 1840 and February 1840 Torres Strait, May to June 1840.]
