Scottish Longcase Clock, 8 Day Deadbeat Escapement

This handsome mahogany longcase clock is a beautiful example in lovely condition. The 8 day movement is by G. Lawrence of Keith and is signed on the attractive silvered dial. The antique clock is in excellent working order with the movement having been fully overhauled recently by our restorer and comes with a full years guarantee. The case is in nice condition with a lovely colour and patina. The clock is raised on the original bracket feet to the base that are again in excellent order.
The movement has a deadbeat escapement. The first significant attempt to improve the anchor escapement was the deadbeat escapement. It was invented around 1675 by astronomer Richard Towneley, and first used by Thomas Tompion in a clock built for Sir Jonas Moore, and in the two precision regulators he made for the new Greenwich Observatory in 1676, mentioned in correspondence between Astronomer Royal John Flamsteed and Towneley.
The deadbeat form of the anchor escapement is less tolerant of inaccuracy in its manufacture or wear during operation and was initially used only in precision antique clocks, but its use spread during the 19th century to most quality pendulum antique clocks. Almost all pendulum antique clocks made today use it.
This clock has lovely proportions measuring 7 feet in height 21" wide by 10" deep.
