Set 6 Antique Victorian Vanity Fair Spy Ape Prints

A set of 6 antique Victorian Vanity Fair framed prints dating from 1875-1896. Beautifully mounted and glazed in modern frames, these antique prints are a good collection to bring a little satirical humour to your wall.
Vanity Fair was a weekly magazine published in Britain from 1868 to 1914 and offered a satirical take on Victorian society, publishing articles on fashion, current events and the latest scandals. A full-page color lithograph caricature of a contemporary celebrity or dignitary appeared in most issues, and it is for these caricatures that Vanity Fair is best known today. The primary artists were Carlo Pellegrini “Ape” and Leslie Ward “Spy”, and it is because of the latter artist as to why these prints are often collectively referred to as “Spy Prints”.
This set of 6 includes:
“Russia”, A caricature portrait of Count Shouvaloff, an influential Russian statesman and a counsellor to Tsar Alexander II. Published on February 13th 1875 in Vanity Fair part of “Statesmen No.194”. By artist Carlo Pellegrini “Ape”.
“G.P.”, A caricature portrait of Mr George Payne, an English breeder of thoroughbred horses. Published in Vanity Fair September 18th 1875 as part of ‘Men of the Day. No.109’. By artist Carlo Pellegrini “Ape”.
“Cuthbert”, A caricature portrait of Cuthbert Larkin a colonel in the British military. Published in Vanity Fair on 11th August 1888 part of “Men of the Day. No. 407”. By artist Carlo Pellegrini “Ape”.
“A Pupil”, A caricature portrait of George Rodney, a British Army officer notable for his service in the Egyptian and Nile campaigns of the 1880s. Published in Vanity Fair On November 10th 1888 in the series “Men of the Day. No.413”. By artist Liborio Prosperi “Lib”.
A caricature portrait of Mr W. C. Quilter JP MP, an English stock broker, art collector and a Member of Parliament. Published in Vanity Fair 9th February 1889 part of “Statesmen No. 560”. By artist Liborio Prosperi “Lib”.
