Set of 6 Kurt Ostervig for Sibast teak chairs

This is a rare set of Mid Century Modern Danish teak and canvas dining chairs designed by Kurt Ostervig for Sibast, dating from circa 1960. These chairs are a perfect example of a simple yet refined design combined with superb craftsmanship. Most of the chairs still retain their two labels: a circular label for 'Danish Furniture Makers Control' and an oval one for 'Sibast Made in Denmark'.
The teak frames have an elegant and 'Modern' looking design with cylindrical legs which taper towards the floor while the uprights holding the backrest gently taper upwards. The decoration is reduced to the use of ebony dowels, one on each front leg and two on each back leg.
Brown canvas has been used for the saddle seats and back rests and, in the case of the seats, this is reenforced with plywood, as can be observed from the underneath on a couple of the chairs where the lining has split. The plywood sheets float within the seats with all the strength coming from the canvas draped and stapled around the seat rails.
Dimensions:
Height 80 cm
Depth 43 cm
Width 51.5 cm
Height of seat approx 46 cm (it varies slightly as the seats are saddle-shaped)
Condition: The frames are in very good condition overall with all joints firm. The joints on the backs of two of the chairs have been strengthened with an additional dowel (sitting between the pair of ebony dowels). The canvas is in good condition in that there are no tears or pulls in the fabric but there are quite a lot of marks and stains. On the underneath of two of the chairs the white lining fabric has split on one side where the edge of the plywood has pressed against it. This does not effect the strength of the seat and the plywood is still retained in position by the other three sides. Although the existing upholstery is functional, the appearance of the chairs would benefit from new canvas.
Please contact us if you would like to see additional photographs as we have several more detailed pictures of each chair.
Delivery: These chairs have been cleaned and the woodwork oiled, and are ready to be delivered to your home. They can be delivered anywhere on mainland England and most of Wales for £75 by our trusted delivery man who is an expert in transporting antique furniture and artwork. Any other items which you may wish to purchase at the same time would only incur a small, if any, incremental charge for their delivery. Please contact us if you wish to purchase several items at the same time.
