Set of 8 George III Gillows Mahogany Dining Chairs
A set of eight George III mahogany fan back dining chairs attributed to Gillows of Lancaster. Comprising six single chairs and ladies and gentleman’s carver chairs with variations in the arms this style of chair with an arched top rail and fan back was introduced by Gillows c.1779 and came to be one of their most popular chairs in the 1780’s. With drop-in seats and on square tapering legs joined by an ‘H’-stretcher.
In good heavy mahogany, the seats have been newly recovered in a dark cream fabric, marks consistent with age and old repairs including to a leg and the backs of two, however all solid with no movement in the joints and are comfortable to sit on.
