Sheraton Wheel Barometer. Ortelli & Co London. Barometer Wheel Banjo
This is a fine early 19th Century mercury Wheel Barometer.

It has an 8 inch silvered dial, and is engraved ..

'Ortelli & Co 20 Cross St, Hatton Garden, London'

The barometer retains its original glass fronted thermometer with a nicely engraved steel backplate.

The mahogany case has a boxwood and ebonised border, and is inlaid with paterae of flowers and shells. It has an arched pediment and brass urn finial.

The door to the rear of the barometer retains its original hinges and catches and opens to reveal the glass mercury syphon and mechanism, complete and in sound order.

The Ortelli's of London.
The author Jean Hood has made a fascinating study of the Italian immigrant Barometer makers, and the Ortelli family in particular. They brought their skills to England from the late 18th Century onwards and made and sold Barometers in London and elsewhere for several generations.

The premises at 20 Cross St Hatton Garden were rented and used between 1808 and 1817 by Joseph (Giuseppe ?) Ortelli, which provides a good indication of the maker and age of this barometer.

I thoroughly recommend anyone interested in the subject to check out Ms Hoods website and her article.. 'The Slightly Less Elusive Ortellis of London & Buckingham etc'
