Silver Plate Bottle Holder, Alex. Clark Co c.1920s
This is a large Silver Plated Bottle Holder from interwar years of the 1920s / 1930s. The bottle holder is round with a spreading base. It has a handle either side set between two pierced galleries which feature a design of overlapping circles.
The bottle holder is part of the Welbeck Plate range made by the Alexander Clark Co Ltd, most probably in Birmingham. The firm was founded in London in 1891, later opening manufacturing plants in first Sheffield and later Birmingham from 1918. They had retail premises in the City of London. The firm was active until the early 1940s.
Condition is generally good, with no dings or dents and no damage to the pierced galleries. There is some plate loss to the inside base where it has been rubbed by many bottles over the last 90 to 100 years of service, but this is not generally visible when the bottle holder is in use. The holder stands 13.7cm / 5.4ins high and is 12cm / 4.7ins in diameter across the top rim. It is easily large enough to hold a sparkling wine bottle or any normal red or white wine bottle. It weighs 434g / 15.3oz.
The underside of the base is stamped The Alexander Clark Company Ltd, London and Welbeck Plate.
