Silver Plate Cake Basket, Sheffield, c.1890-1910

This is an attractive Late 19th / Early 20th Century Silver Plate Cake Basket. The basket is basically oblong with scalloped sides and stands on four bun feet. The top rim has pierced corners and the swing handle rises to a point in the centre.
Although probably originally intended for small cakes at afternoon tea, the basket would work equally well for bread on the dining table or as a fruit bowl.
The cake basket was made in Sheffield by Kayser, Ellison & Co and dates to the period between around 1890 and 1910. The firm was founded in Sheffield in 1825 by John Wilson & John Hawksworth as specialist cutlery and knife makers. Joseph Ellison joined in 1846 and became the company’s US representative. Around 1880 Charles Kayser joined the business and it was renamed Kayser, Ellison & Co. They moved into silver and silver plate but during and after the First World War became solely a manufacturer of steel tools.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents, no damage to the pierced sections, no significant plate loss and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect with use and the passage of time. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The basket measures 26.5cm / 10.4ins by 20.1cm / 7.9ins and stands 19.2cm / 7.5ins high with the handle upright. It weighs 508g / 17.9oz.
The underside of the base is stamped EPNS for silver plate and has the padlock trademark for Kayser, Ellison & Co.
Shipping in the UK is £6 by Royal Mail Tracked 24.
