Silver Plate Jam Jar Cover, Mappin & Webb, c.1920s

This is a really good quality George V Silver Plated Jam or Marmalade Jar Holder with matching spoon from the 1920s. The holder is on a wide circular base with a gadrooned rim standing on 3 ball feet. The sides of the holder have a pierced design of overlapping ovals. The long handled spoon is perfect for reaching down to the bottom of the preserve jar. Both the lid of the jar holder and the top of the stem of the spoon are elegantly engraved with the initials AB.
Your jam or marmalade jar from the grocers would simply be placed inside the holder and when it ran out you replaced it with a new one.
The holder is made by world famous silversmiths, jewellers and electroplaters Mappin & Webb. It is in their Prince's Plate range, which was their finest quality silver plate.
Condition is good with the exception of a slight waviness to the rim of the lid just to one side of the spoon slot and another almost opposite. There is no plate loss and the holder stands securely on a flat surface. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The holder is 9.7cm / 3.8ins in diameter, whilst the base is 13.1cm / 5.1ins in diameter. It stands 14.4cm / 5.7ins high to the top of the finial. The spoon is 16.9cm / 6.6ins long. All together it weighs 529g / 18.6oz.
The underside of the base is marked with the triple deposit logo and Mappin & Webb's Prince's Plate London & Sheffield plus the date letter S in a shield, which gives us a date of manufacture in the early 1920s.
