Silver Waltham Ellery pocket watch with albert
A silver Waltham Ellery pocket watch with albert.
The watch has a key-wound movement, William Ellery grade, which is working nicely. The serial number on the movement, 2,183,483, dates it back to between November 1883 to April 1884. The movement is protected by an inner hinged cover.
William Ellery signed the Declaration of Independence for Rhode Island.
During the Civil War, Waltham's watch factory designed the William Ellery model. Selling for just $13.00, these watches became very popular with Union soldiers. By 1865, the year the war ended, William Ellery movements represented almost 45 per cent of Waltham's unit sales although today we see far more of other Waltham grades, such as the Traveler.
The watch measures 56.5mm diameter excluding the stem and the loop. The case is silver and there are hallmarks inside the Birmingham 1898 with a case maker's mark for Alfred Bedford, the Manager of Waltham UK. So, although the markings are correct for a Waltham pocket watch, it is apparent that it is a later case. Both the case and the glass are in good condition.
The signed dial is in good condition.
The watch comes with a silver single chain, 31cm long including the T-bar and the clasp.
