Small 17th Century Welsh Oak Chest of Drawers

An original and very high quality 17th century small oak chest of drawers, Wales c. 1670 with secret drawer at top above three graduated drawers, each with bollection moulded fronts inset with thickly cut walnut veneers and original brass drop split pin handles with finely engraved backplates. The work with the walnut is beautiful – on the secret drawer it has been laid across lengthwise and then alternately, bookmatched on the drawer below, then lengthwise on the next, and then bookmatched on the base drawer.
Draw linings in oak original also with side rebated runners and nailed up bottom boards.
Elaborate and beautifully shaped corbels to front and sides and well carved dentilations/ing, beneath the original oversailing twin boarded pegged top. The corbels with small applied diamond shaped mouldings, again in walnut.
Locks are later replacements (18th or early 19th century), brass escutcheons possibly also later although no evidence of earlier escutcheons is visible. Lovely deep and widely swept plinth. The stiles re-tipped a very long time ago at feet.
Beautifully proportioned with a fabulous rich and very well developed colour and exemplary patination.
Extremely heavy despite its small size and very robust.
An early Welsh chest not to be missed, rarely seen in such original condition and of such a beautiful colour.
Dimensions are:
41 inches wide, 22.5 inches deep and 37.5 inches high.
For metric please multiply by 2.5 I describe and photograph my pieces accurately and with the aim that on arrival each will exceed expectations.
I operate a full refund guarantee and am always happy to give free, honest and friendly advice.
