Still life painting by William Henry Hunt

A fine and interesting painting of flowers by highly regarded still life artist William Henry Hunt 1790-1864. The painting is interestingly painted on a japanned board probably in watercolour. The subject is typical for the artist with roses, and for humour and interest some bramble crawling with insects. The work is in good condition, there is some slight discolouration to the varnish in places and the chamfered edge has some chips, but overall it is in excellent condition and bright of colour. The work remains in the original superb gilt frame with the artist's name and dates and it is in excellent untouched condition with all original gilding. The panel is inscribed on the reverse and dated 1849.
Hunt is a key figure in English watercolour painting and there is much biographical information available about him. He was elected a full member of the watercolour society in 1826 and so synonymous is he with still life painting he is often known as 'bird's nest' Hunt. His work went on to influence all the great Victorian still life painters,
A fine and interesting work by a highly regarded artist in excellent country house condition.
