Stunning George Jones Majolica Sardine Box c.1875

A lovely George Jones majolica sardine box & cover in a gorgeous turquoise enamel ground. The box with stylised moulded spikes of seaweed and a rope twist effect to the rim. The cover has three magnificent sardines, superbly modelled and decorated, that are laying across a bed of brightly coloured seaweed. The rims are picked out with an ochre yellow enamel and the inside is a beautiful lilac. c.1875.
Marked to the base with a black painted "Z." in an unglazed section amongst the usual marbled ground, and the same painted mark inside the edge of the cover. This method of marking is common to many George Jones pieces that often lack a factory stamp and is distinctive to them.
Reference: George Jones Ceramics 1861-1951, Cluett, Figure 109 for another example.
It measures 9cm (3 1/2") high and 14.7cm (5 3/8") by 12.7cm (5") wide.
Condition is excellent with no damage, repair or restoration and minimal handling wear with no crazing. Payment is accepted by bank transfer, card payments (via an online invoice, I'm afraid we cannot take payments over the telephone), Paypal and UK personal cheque. If you prefer to pay by Stripe please go to our website where we offer that option and additionally options to "Pay in 30 days" and to pay in 3 instalments, all securely supported.
