Superb William and Mary Figured Walnut Escritoire

A fine William and Mary Walnut Scriptor (also sometimes called Escritoire) of small proportions at only 42 inches wide, 20.5 inches deep (max) and 65 inches high.
English and dating from around 1685. The whole scriptor is dressed in superbly figured walnut, beautifully book and quarter matched with featherbanding to the fall, principal and interior drawers, ogee mouldings to the waist and to the flared ogee moulded cornice which has a concealed cushion drawer.
The solid fall lowers smoothly on the original iron stays to provide a large and completely flat writing desk with a wide pigeon hole at the back which could house a very large laptop or several tablets at 20 inches wide, 15 inches deep and 4.5 inches high.
The well fitted interior has six large drawers, four smaller drawers and a pen drawer each with very fine oak linings, dressed in wonderfully figured walnut with featherbanded borders and retaining original brass drop handles. The central door with original ornate brass hinges, escutcheon and a working key. The six oak lined pigeon holes above slide out to reveal three original secret oak drawers with leather tab handles.
The principal drawers to the lower case retain their original brass drop handles and backplates and original escutcheons also. Locks are present throughout and each is operated by the same key as works the fall (a pair of these keys will be provided along with the key to the central door). Backboards and drawer linings are oak and show medullary rays.
Minor dings and marks and small restorations but overall the scriptor is in showroom condition and has been fully professionally restored during the last 100 years. All of the drawers are fully oak lined and open and close smoothly. The scriptor originally would have had bun feet and these have been replaced with bracket feet – very well done and not at all noticeable. Original bun feet almost never survived on such early pieces as they suffered with the damp floors and insects and almost without exception the scriptors you see today which have bun feet have replacement feet, not original.
The colour and figuring of the walnut throughout is lovely. A huge amount of skilled cabinet work is on show here, all of it created by a master craftsman using hand held tools. It would have been made bespoke for a very wealthy person.
This beautiful scriptor is a show stopping piece which will look stunning in a modern or traditional interior. With wireless technology, pieces like this are regaining their popularity and place in the home as a beautiful and practical working piece of antique furniture.
Dimensions
Maximum width is 42 inches, depth is 20.5 inches and height is 65 inches.
The cases separate at 31.5 inches from the floor.
Depth when the fall is open is 41 inches.
For metric please multiply each inch by 2.5
I describe and photograph my pieces accurately and with the aim that on arrival each will exceed expectations.
I operate a full refund guarantee and am always happy to give free, honest and friendly advice.
