Sycamore Food Bowl Late 18th century sycamore %%alt5%%
This sycamore bowl has been used over a very long period of time, the wear in the bottom and the historic iron wire tie are evidence of this. The bowl is late 18th century and the desperation to keep it in service a sign of the poverty in the countryside at the time, that split would have started opening over a hundred years ago. It is totally stabilized, evidenced by the fact that it didn't become firewood a century ago. The shape of it suggests it would be English even though it came to light in the Welsh marches. It is a lovely thing and even though it's had such a long working life the marks of the pole lathe on which it was turned are clearly visible. It has a pleasing colour and skin, the mend making it an interesting addition to any treen collection.
