Sydney Maiden Pen & Wash Cartoon for Men Only Mag
An original 1960s ink and wash cartoon on paper by Sydney Maiden for 'Men Only' magazine. This cartoon pre-dates the magazine's relaunch in 1971 by Paul Raymond Publications as a soft-core pornographic magazine. It depicts two intellectuals in a busy city bar with a hand written caption below: "You've no notion what a really good Vacuum cleaner makes to Life". It is signed "fab" which, presumably, was the alias used by Sydney Maiden for this type of commission.
Hand-written in ink on the reverse is "from SYDNEY MAIDEN, c/o The Savage Club, Carlton House Terrace, S.W., and below that in pencil "Published in Men Only".
Biography: Sydney Joseph Fabricius Maiden was a landscape and figurative painter in oil and watercolour. He was born in India in 1893 and served as an officer in the East Kent Regiment in both wars. He lived in London and later in Chipstead, near Sevenoaks, Kent. He exhibited in the 1930s at the Goupil Gallery, the New English Art Club and the Royal Academy. Sydney Maiden's work has been offered at auction multiple times, with a range of realised prices depending on the size and medium of the artwork. The record price for this artist at auction is 2,332 USD for an oil on canvas of Ramsgate harbour, sold in 2012.
Dimensions: 25 x 15 cm
Condition: Very good vintage condition with good colours. It would frame very well.
