T. C. Barfield W/colour St. Peter & Centurion 1917
We are pleased to offer this large watercolour by the historical.architectural artist Thomas Charles Barfield, who has signed the painting in the lower left hand corner and dated it 1917. The painting depicts the visit of St. Peter to the house of Cornelius the Centurion in Caesarea, depicted in Acts 10.
We understand that after a great deal of research by a gentleman in the parish if Claybrooke and with help from a relative of Thomas Barfield that it is believed that the centurian in the corner depicts Mr. Barfield himself, and the woman standing to the left, his wife Anne. Also the man in the dark grey hood is his father Samuel.
We are also listing the companion piece to this painting, although a different size, which depicts Matthew 8: 5-13 Jesus and the Centurion.
This watercolour is either a forerunner of a later oil painting, or an inexact copy of an oil painting that Thomas Barfield gave to the church of St. Peter's in Claybrooke Parva, Leicestershire, as a memorial to his late wife Anne, who died on 2nd May, 1917 aged 59. The oil painting was exhibited at the Leicester Society of Artists in 1918, but given to the church of St. Peter's in 2019 by Mr. Barfield and remains there to this day.
Thomas Charles Barfield was an historical painter, illustrator, designer and loving husband and father. He was Churchwarden of Claybrooke 1910-1913. He, along with his brother Samuel, were founder Members of the Leicester Society of Artists and Thomas was their Secretary from 1882-1922 until his retirement. He was a grammar school art teacher in Leicestershire and second Master at Leicester School of Art, where he had studied.
He was born on 6th July, 1858, the son of Samuel Barfield, a Wood and Stone carver, who employed 5 men and 2 apprentices. He had two brothers, Samuel S and Lawrence.
By 1871, Samuel was living in Market Harborough, had had another son George E and was employing 32 men and 6 apprentices as an Architectural Sculptor. During the 1870s Thomas studied at the Leicester School of Art under the headmastership of Wilmot Pilsbury and, in 1873, obtained the only free studentship awarded that year at the School. His brother Lawrence also studied there. By the 1881 Census, Thomas was listed as an Artist, and his brother George as an architectural sculptor.
In 1882 Thomas married Anne nee Taylor on 3rd August in St.Andrew's Church, Leicester. By the 1891 Census, they were living at 4 Lansdown Road, Knighton Blaby, Leicestershire and had two sons, Alan B, Kenneth Charles and two daughters, Margery and Elizabeth Joan. Thomas was listed as a Teacher of Art.
In 1901, the family were living at The Garth, Hinkley Turnpike, Great Claybrooke. In 1911, he and Anne, along with Margery and Elizabeth were living in Claybrooke Magna and he was listed as Teacher of Art for Leicestershire County Council.
At some stage after the death of Anne in 1917, (we can find no trace of him in the 1921 Census), he moved to Ninfield, near Battle in Sussex, where he was living and still listed in the 1929 Register as an Artist painter and Certified Art Master at The Green Teapot, High Street, Ninfield, with his spinster daughter Elizabeth. This 5 bedroom detached house is still standing and now called Green Cottage, which is where he died on 16th January, 1942, leaving his estate to Elizabeth.
The watercolour has been newly double mounted in two tone acid-free mountboard to complement and is newly framed in a 1 1/4 inch bronzed wooden frame to suit. It will be suppplied with new brass hangers, new brass picture wire and will be ready to hang.

Condition: Very good. There is no foxing, fading or damage and the mounts and frame are new.
