The Recipe A D Bastin 1849-1913 Watercolour

We have for sale a charming late Victorian watercolour painting by the excellent English artist Alfred Dickman Bastin 1849 – 1913.
This very attractive painting depicts a rural domestic kitchen scene of sleeping cat on a chair and a lady reading a book sitting on a chair by her kitchen table. She has obviously just returned from a shopping trip on a windy autumn day as dead leaves blown in by the wind are scattered on the flag floor, her full shopping basket is standing by her chair and she is still wearing her outdoor clothes. She seems to be leafing through her book, searching for something, a recipe perhaps before she starts cooking. The painting is signed by the artist A D Bastin to the bottom left.
The painting is approximately 17.5 inches (44cm) wide and 14,5 inches (37cm) high including the frame, and is in a very good original condition. The picture has been remounted in a conservation grade mount and re-framed in a new good quality gilded wooden frame.
About the Artist
Alfred Dickman Bastin was born in 80 Upper Seymour Street, St Pancras, London in the spring of 1849 to John and Matilda Bastin. Alfred's father was an excellent Wood Engraver and is well known for his engravings of buildings, one of which "St Bartholomews Hospital" now resides in the Welcome Collection. Alfred married Emily Elizabeth Dickman at St Pancras Parish Chapel on 8 September 1883 and his occupation is given as Artist on the marriage certificate. From the time of his marriage he changed his surname so that it become double-barreled, Alfred Dickman Bastin. By 1886, Alfred had a shop on the High Street in Egham, Surrey
A D Bastin exhibited widely between 1871-1907, including works at the Royal Academy, the Birmingham City Art Gallery, the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool, Royal Society of British Artists the Manchester City Art Gallery and the Royal Oil Painters Institute. Alfred primarily painted figures as well as portraiture. The painting we are able to offer for sale is very typical of his work.
